Video editing for coaches: three routes and what each costs

A coach who sells a program gets videos edited one of three ways: do it yourself, pay an editor or an agency, or use a tool for part of it. A few videos and hours to spare: do it yourself. A steady schedule, or an hour worth more to you than an editor's fee: hire, which is the right answer for many coaches. One slow step: try a tool. One long-form video is listed at $50 for up to 5 minutes at Your Video Editor and $327 for a horizontal video at Tasty Edits (read 2026-10-04).

I'm Kyle. I built a tool for one step of the third route, so I have a stake. I'm not a coach or an editor, and I did not hire the services or test the tools named here for this page. Each price is from the business's own page, read 2026-10-04 and linked beside it.

Topic Do it yourself Pay an editor or an agency Use a tool for part of it
What you do The whole edit, in an editing app. Send raw footage and a brief, then review the cut. Run one step in a tool, then finish the video.
What it costs Your hours, plus the app. DaVinci Resolve is listed as free. Final Cut Pro is $299.99 once (read 2026-10-04). One long-form video: from $50 for up to 5 finished minutes at Your Video Editor, $327 for a horizontal video at Tasty Edits. By the month: $295 for 4 videos at editvideo.io, labeled a limited-time offer (read 2026-10-04). The tool, an editing app and your hours. Descript Hobbyist is $16 per person per month on annual billing (read 2026-10-04).
Good at Control of each cut, and a skill you keep. A finished video back, plus motion graphics, color and sound. One slow step handed to software, with a free plan or trial to test.
The catch It takes your hours, and the app takes learning. You still brief and review. Read a plan's limits before you pay. It does its part. You check it and finish the video.
A first step Edit one short video in a free app. Here is one real cut. Buy one video or a test edit first, and send a one-page brief. Try a free plan on the step that slows you most.

What editing a coach video actually involves

Doing it yourself, all five steps are yours. Hiring takes the last four off your hands. A tool takes one or two.

  1. Record

    Yours on each route.

  2. Cut the mistakes

Retakes, pauses and filler words come out.

  3. Cover the talking with B-roll

Other shots play over your voice.

  4. Add captions

The words on screen, timed to your voice.

  5. Export

    One finished file to post.

If you pay someone

Five agency pages and a price each lists. They are examples, not the whole market. Video editor cost per video lists more plans.

Whoever you hire, send a brief. How to brief a video editor has a template.

If you do it yourself or use a tool

First, the editing app.

  • DaVinci Resolve: listed as free (read 2026-10-04).
  • Final Cut Pro: $299.99 once, or $12.99 per month in Apple Creator Studio (read 2026-10-04).
  • CapCut: its own article calls Standard the free version, lists Pro at $19.99 per month and says prices vary by region (read 2026-10-04).

Then six tools, by step.

  • Cutting the mistakes. Descript edits by deleting text in a transcript. Its pricing page lists a free plan. Wisecut removes silences and false starts. Its pricing page lists a free plan, then US$23.25 a month, billed annually (read 2026-10-04).
  • Short clips with captions. Submagic's Starter plan is $19 a month for 15 videos of up to 2 minutes, with a free trial. OpusClip lists a free plan, then $15 or $29 a month. Vizard's free plan covers 60 minutes of uploaded video a month (read 2026-10-04).
  • Recording. Riverside lists a free plan, then Pro at $29 a month, or $24 billed annually (read 2026-10-04).

On B-roll, five of these tools list stock or generated clips: Descript, Riverside, Submagic, OpusClip and Vizard (read 2026-10-04). That is often the right call: see AI B-roll generator: stock, generated or your own footage. Tools that work with clips you filmed, Descript and Vizard among them, are in my roundup.

The tool I built

Where Takehound fits

Takehound is mine, so weigh this part. It does one step of the third route, not the whole edit: it puts your own B-roll on a script.

You paste a script in a desktop browser and point it at a folder of footage you filmed. For each line it can, it picks one of your shots and gives a one-line reason. Where nothing fits, the line stays on you. No stock, nothing generated.

You get a B-roll timeline (an FCPXML file) for DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut, and you or your editor finish it there. Not Premiere, not a finished video. The Mac command-line version takes a talking head you already recorded.

Little footage of your own, or want a finished video back? Then hire.
