About Takehound

Takehound is a self-serve tool for people who talk to camera, have a folder of their own footage and are not editors.

You paste a script in the browser, or hand the Mac command-line version a talking head you already recorded, and point it at footage you filmed. For each line it can, it picks one of your own shots and gives a one-line reason. Where nothing fits, it places nothing and you stay on camera. You get a B-roll timeline (an FCPXML file) to finish in DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut.

Who made it, and why

Kyle

I'm Kyle. I built Takehound. I have a full-time job, and I'm not an editor or a coach.

The little time I get for videos should go to the part that makes a video mine, so I built Takehound to do the rest: the logging, finding and placing. That is the 80%. The story, the taste and the final cut are the 20%, and they stay with you.

On my own 50-second talk, cut with the Mac version (best of three runs), 2 of the 7 lines got no shot. Takehound proposed cutaways for the other 5 and I kept 3.

Why it is called Takehound

A newshound sniffs out the story. Takehound goes through your own footage and, for each line it can, brings back the shot that fits.

What it is not

  • Not a stock library. It uses only footage you filmed.
  • Not a video generator. Nothing is generated.
  • Not a finished-video maker. You get a timeline, and you or your editor finish the cut in DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut. It does not export to Premiere.
  • Not an editing service. It is a tool you or your editor run.

Where it sits among other tools

Other tools work with your own clips too. AI B-roll from your own footage lists nine of them beside Takehound and says what each one does better than mine. I have not used those nine, so each fact about them comes from the vendor's own pages.

Takehound is built for someone who is not an editor: each pick comes with a stated reason, a line stays on you when nothing fits, and you or your editor finish the timeline in DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut.

What it costs today

Takehound is free during an invite-only beta. No card. After the beta nothing auto-renews: you see the price first and decide.

Your files

Your video files stay on your computer. To describe your shots and choose among them, your browser sends small still images from your clips, plus your script, the shot descriptions and the names of your clips and folders as text, through Takehound's server to Anthropic's API. The privacy page has the details.

How to get in

Takehound is invite-only. Ask for an invite on the home page, or on the page for coaches if you coach.
