A colour grade
Warm studio
by Takehound
A lamp-lit studio: warm whites, deeper blacks and a little more colour in the room, with your skin as it was shot.
Aims for this colour

One frame of a real talk, as shot and graded toward Warm studio by the editor. Slide to compare. Worked out from frames across the whole recording, the grade came to:
- Light on the face
- +0.85 of a stop, the highlights held
- Contrast
- 1.2 (the most it allows)
- Blacks
- Pushed under by 2.8% of white
- Temperature
- Warmer by 0.45 of the dial
- Colour strength
- 1.05 times as shot
When to use it
Use it when the set is part of the brand: shelves, wood, lamps, a backdrop you chose and light the same way every week. It takes the blacks deep and lets the colour in the room come up, so a warm set looks lit on purpose rather than simply warm. On the frame above it made the colours a little richer, and kept skin out of that change.
Who it suits
It suits a creator who films in the same room every week and has put work into it, and a channel meant to feel rich and close rather than bright and airy. Skin is kept out of the extra colour, so the room deepens while your face stays as it was shot.
What it changes
Where Warm studio takes the picture and how far the editor may move it to get there, beside Natural, the grade a talk gets when nobody names one. Levels run from 0, black, to 255, white. What is not listed is as in Natural.
| What | Warm studio | Natural |
|---|---|---|
| Blacks, toward | 18 of 255 | 30 of 255 |
| Middle tones, toward | 140 of 255 | 150 of 255 |
| Highlights, toward | 235 of 255 | 240 of 255 |
| Colour strength, toward | 0.24 | 0.17 |
| Whites and greys | Red over blue by 14 | Red over blue by 6 |
| Contrast | 0.9 to 1.2 | 0.9 to 1.15 |
| Cooler, at most | A quarter of the dial | Three quarters of the dial |
| Warmer, at most | The whole dial | Three quarters of the dial |
| Green or magenta | Left as shot | Up to 0.06 either way |
| Colour strength, range | 0.95 to 1.18 times as shot | 0.9 to 1.1 times as shot |
The middle tones go half of the way to their aim and highlights are only ever opened. Your face is exposed first, and skin keeps the colour it was shot in.
