A colour grade

Bright window

by Takehound

Light and airy, like a talk by a big window: a clean white, open highlights, gentle blacks and calm colours, with your skin as it was shot.

Aims for this colour

A frame of a talking-head video as it was shot
The same frame graded toward Bright window
As shotBright window

One frame of a real talk, as shot and graded toward Bright window by the editor. Slide to compare. Worked out from frames across the whole recording, the grade came to:

Light on the face
+0.85 of a stop, the highlights held
Contrast
1.12 (the most it allows)
Blacks
Pushed under by 3.5% of white
Colour strength
0.88 times as shot (the least it allows)

When to use it

Use it on a talk recorded in daylight: a desk beside a window, pale walls, a room that is already light. It aims for a bright middle with highlights just short of white and blacks that stay soft, and it takes what should be white or grey in the room most of the way to a clean white with only a trace of warmth. It brightens the whole picture by 0.3 of a stop at most and never darkens the middle tones, so it will not turn a dim evening room into a sunny one. Your face is still exposed first, as in every grade here.

Who it suits

It suits a creator whose videos feel like a conversation across a desk: a consultant walking through a framework, a teacher explaining one idea per video, anyone who records in the day and wants it to look that way. It keeps colours calm, between 0.88 and 1.05 of how they were shot, so the room gains little or no colour.

What it changes

Where Bright window takes the picture and how far the editor may move it to get there, beside Natural, the grade a talk gets when nobody names one. Levels run from 0, black, to 255, white. What is not listed is as in Natural.

The middle tones go half of the way to their aim and highlights are only ever opened. Your face is exposed first, and skin keeps the colour it was shot in.
