A colour grade

Soft warm

by Takehound

Natural, with the room left a little warm: soft contrast, calm colours, and your skin as it was shot.

A frame of a talking-head video as it was shot
The same frame graded toward Soft warm
As shotSoft warm

One frame of a real talk, as shot and graded toward Soft warm by the editor. Slide to compare. Worked out from frames across the whole recording, the grade came to:

Light on the face
+0.85 of a stop, the highlights held
Contrast
1.15 (the most it allows)
Blacks
Pushed under by 3.2% of white
Temperature
Warmer by 0.39 of the dial
Colour strength
0.9 times as shot (the least it allows)

When to use it

Use it when the talk should look natural and well lit rather than graded: most weekly talking-head videos, recorded in a home office or a spare room. It moves what should be white or grey only half of the way to a mild warm white, so the room keeps much of its own character, and it holds contrast and colour close to how they were shot.

Who it suits

It suits a creator who posts several long videos a week and wants each to look like the last without thinking about colour. Its numbers sit close to Natural's, the grade a talk gets when nobody names one, with twice Natural's warmth left in the whites and greys. Choose it over Natural when your room looks a little cold as shot.

What it changes

Where Soft warm takes the picture and how far the editor may move it to get there, beside Natural, the grade a talk gets when nobody names one. Levels run from 0, black, to 255, white. What is not listed is as in Natural.

The middle tones go half of the way to their aim and highlights are only ever opened. Your face is exposed first, and skin keeps the colour it was shot in.
