A look

Black and white

by Takehound

No colour at all: serif titles on black, quiet grey for the small words, and stressed words set in italic.

As shotBlack and white

One frame of a real talk, as shot and with a punch line drawn by the editor in Black and white: Inter Bold, with the stressed words set in Instrument Serif italic and coloured with the accent, lightened to 75% so they read over the picture. Slide to compare. Every word on it was said in the talk.

When to use it

Use it when the colour should come from the footage and not from the cards: a video built on your own clips, a talk recorded in a colourful room, or a channel whose thumbnails already carry a strong colour. No card in it has a hue, so nothing on screen competes with a clip beside it. With no colour to lean on, the stress falls on the type: the stressed words switch to a serif italic, and in a comparison the right and the wrong are told apart by white against a darker grey.

Who it suits

It suits a creator who wants the channel to look edited and serious before settling on a brand colour. It is built on Clean, so its lists, chapters and labels keep Clean's shapes; moving later to a coloured look built on Clean changes the colours and keeps those shapes.

What it changes

Black and white starts from Clean and sets its colours, how fast words come up and how its words sit over your video. Whatever it leaves alone is Clean's.
